In Paul Schrader's 1972 book, Transcendental Style in Film, the renowned filmmaker/theorist (with a Christian background… he went to Calvin) outlined his theory for how transcendence is achieved stylistically in cinema. Although his career spanned the 1910s through the 1960s, his meticulousness, tyrannical-dictatorial methods, idiosyncratic shooting style, stubborn devotion to his art, and difficulty raising money to finance his film projects ensured that his output remained low. In his book, Transcendental Style in Film, Paul Schrader discusses how many narrative films used what he terms "overabundant means" in conveying enlightenment or a dramatic form of religious experience.
